David Kelly's conversations with journalists about lead indirectly to
his untimely death. But beyond this, evidence presented to the Hutton Inquiry
shed light on the issues he was telling them about. The inquiry began to uncover the
machinations behind the British Government's decision to go to war in Iraq in 2003,
and its use of intelligence to attempt to persuade a sceptical public of their
case that Saddam Hussein's Weapons of Mass Destruction
presented a "current and serious" threat to the UK. This case has now had a
thorough airing in various inquiries on both sides of the Atlantic and in
Australia. The evidence presented to these inquiries makes very interesting reading and
will be discussed (along with other issues related to the current global conflict)
on a new community site: the Outer Limits.
In the meantime, the aim of this reading list is
to provide a wider context for the Hutton Inquiry: What were the causes of the
2003 war in Iraq? How do they relate to the "War on Terror", the events of
September 11th, 2001, and the relationship between the U.S., and other Western
powers towards the Middle East and Islam. These links take you to Amazon.co.uk
where you can buy the books (if you do I will get a small commission which may
help to defray the expense of running this site).

About the site
I made this site, because I was interested in the Hutton Inquiry, but I found it difficult to follow the transcripts on the official site.
The formatting is done automatically using php and mysql. I do not intend to introduce any errors into the transcripts,
but it is possible that some unforseen error in my code may do this. Therefore you should always check any quote against the original transcripts.
Of course I shall immediately correct any errors that are brought to my attention.
I intend to keep the site running for the forseeable future, at least until after the report is published, and I hope to add new features: index of evidence, search evidence.

The Outer Limits
I have set up a online community site called the Outer Limits for informed discussion of issues related to Intelligence and Policy in the "War on Terror". The site is still under development, but please have a look, register, and post your news and views on the site.
Link Added: Flood Report
The Australian Inquiry into the use of intelligence in advance of the 2003 invasion of Iraq has now been published.
Further Reading List Added
I have added a reading list of commercially available books on topics related to the Hutton Inquiry, to supplement the publically available texts which are linked from the site.
These links (and the cover images on the right of the screen) take you to Amazon.co.uk where you can buy the books (if you do I will get a small commission which may help to defray the expense of running this site).
Butler Review Published
Lord Butler's review of Review of Intelligence on Weapons of Mass Destruction in the run up to the war in Iraq has been published.
Link to US Senate Reports Added
New links have been added to reports from the US Senate's Select Committee on Intelligence concerning
- US prewar intelligence assessments of Iraq's military capabilites and intentions.
- The US Intelligence Community's activities before and after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Link to Neil Report Added
Following the Hutton Report the BBC Governors instigated a review of the editorial issues raised by the Inquiry. The review, headed by a former Director of BBC News and Current Affairs, Ronald Neil, published its report in June 2004.
Link to Phillis Report Added
This independent review of government communications was instigated after the Jo Moore/Martin Sixsmith affair and criticism of the government communications team at 10 Downing Street following the controversy surrounding the Prime Minister’s wife in her dealings with Peter Foster ("Cheriegate"). However, while the review was in progress problems related to government communications in the run-up to war in Iraq came to light. These formed part of the context for the Phillis Report (see page of the report for more details).
